Once pushed aside by the wireless revolution, wired earphones are making an unexpected return—not only as listening devices but also as bold fashion statements and markers of individuality. This resurgence has been largely fueled by Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who are embracing “new nostalgia” by reinventing retro objects as contemporary style icons.

The movement gained major traction after BLACKPINK’s Jennie shared a post-concert photo in Barcelona wearing wired earphones instead of the familiar sleek AirPods. Her choice instantly caught fans’ attention, projecting a distinctly vintage, effortless vibe. She was later spotted sporting them again at Incheon International Airport, reinforcing the trend. Fellow member Rosé also mentioned in a Vogue interview that she prefers her “classic wired style.” Other celebrities—such as Han So-hee, Moon Ga-young, and Lee Hyo-ri—have joined in, often letting one earbud dangle as a subtle but deliberate fashion signal. What once looked outdated is now being redefined as chic and expressive.

High-end fashion brands have quickly taken notice. Chanel, for instance, unveiled its Premiere Sound Watch—a fusion of watch, necklace, and wired earphones. Despite its hefty $15,000 price tag, the product drew praise for merging futuristic design with nostalgic flair.

Cultural analysts suggest this isn’t just a rejection of wireless tech, but a symbolic return to a slower, more intentional way of connecting with the world. Wired earphones embody what some call “chosen inconvenience” or “romantic analog.” The cords—once seen as a nuisance—are now perceived as elegant, jewelry-like details. Beyond aesthetics, users appreciate the practical perks: no charging required, consistent sound quality, and fewer connection issues. Some enthusiasts even see them as a purer, more complete expression of technology compared to wireless alternatives.

In short, wired earphones are striking the perfect balance between function, individuality, and emotional nostalgia. For many young people today, wearing them isn’t merely about listening to music—it’s a quiet act of style, identity, and resistance against a world obsessed with seamless convenience.
