Autonomous driving company Waymo has opened up its robotaxi service to anyone who desires a ride around Los Angeles. It's a significant milestone for Waymo, 15 years after the company originated as a covert project at Google. The expansion follows eight months after Waymo initiated rides in Los Angeles to a select group of passengers drawn from a waiting list of over 300,000 individuals. Now, anyone with the Waymo One app can summon a ride within a 129-square-kilometer area encompassing the second-largest city in the United States. After Waymo obtained approval from California regulators to monetize rides 15 months ago, the company opted to launch its services in San Francisco before challenging established ride-hailing giants like Uber and Lyft in California. Before entering into competition with Uber and Lyft, Waymo unveiled its robotaxis in Phoenix in 2020 and has been gradually expanding the scope of its service in that Arizona city ever since. Driverless rides are proving to be more than just a passing trend. Waymo reports that it now completes over 150,000 weekly trips in its robotaxis. "Our service has evolved swiftly, and our riders are reaping the benefits of fully autonomous driving," said Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana in a blog post. However, Waymo is still believed to be incurring losses. Nonetheless, the company has made tremendous strides since Google began developing self-driving cars in 2009. Still under the ownership of its parent company Alphabet, Waymo has firmly established itself as the undisputed leader in the burgeoning robotaxi industry. Tesla plans to roll out a competing "Cybercab" service by 2026, while Amazon intends to launch its driverless rides with its Zoox service by 2025. Safety remains the top concern for most people when it comes to driverless vehicles. Waymo’s robotaxis have provided over 2 million rides to passengers without a major incident that caused its operations to be halted. However, other companies—including Cruise, owned by General Motors—have had their operations suspended following serious accidents.
