Reporters Without Borders is asking Apple to remove its AI feature that summarizes news stories, after a false headline was pushed out from a BBC report. A push notification from Apple Intelligence last week put a twist on a BBC's story, wrongly claiming that Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO, had shot himself. The BBC contacted Apple to raise concerns but didn't get a response. Vincent Berthier, head of the technology and journalism team at Reporters Without Borders, criticized the feature, saying that AI is like a "probability machine“ and facts shouldn’t be left to chance. He warned that the automatic spread of false information breaks down media credibility and threatens the public’s right to accurate news. The group also expressed concerns that AI tools are still too new to be trusted with public information. The problem is that news outlets have no control over the summaries created by Apple Intelligence, which are shown under their name. While AI can help write articles, Apple’s feature sometimes gives misleading information to users. Apple’s AI issues bring up bigger problems in the media industry, where AI tools have raised concerns about copyright violations and the reliabilityof content. Some publishers, like The New York Times, have filed lawsuits, while others, like Axel Springer, have signed agreements with developers.
