Recently, over 400 creatives working in Hollywood, including actors, musicians, and directors, signed an open letter to the U.S. government, advocating (지지하다) stronger copyright protections in the age of Artificial Intelligence. They’re concerned that AI companies are exploiting copyrighted works without proper authorization (허가 없이 저작권 있는 작품을 부당하게 활용하다), like films, books, and music, which could seriously harm the creative industry. This letter was in response to Google’s AI Action Plan, which suggests that AI companies should be permitted to utilize copyrighted material for training without seeking explicit approval, citing “fair use” as a legal justification. Google warns that overly restrictive copyright regulations might hinder AI innovation. However, many artists disagree, asserting that AI should be required to comply with (따르다, 준수하다) the same legal frameworks as human creators. The letter points out that robust copyright protections have enabled the creative industries to flourish (번영하다, 번창하다) and have supported millions of jobs. Weakening these protections could lead to the exploitation (착취) of creators and could have detrimental (해로운, 부정적인 영향을 주는) effects on adjacent fields such as journalism, photography, and architecture. Among the signers is Sir Paul McCartney, who used AI in 2023 to help wrap up (완성하다, 마무리하다) a Beatles song that was unfinished. While he supports the use of AI as a tool, he emphasized that it should not be used to exploit (부당하게 이용하다) creators, stating “AI is a powerful tool… but it should not be used to undermine or appropriate (침해하거나 무단으로 차용하다) the work of creative professionals.”
